In Memory of my beloved son, Kaniela Kaninau
March 31, 1985 – April 5, 2003
My Story
Mother of three children. I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii.
My youngest son, Kaniela Kaninau, forever 18, died by suicide, April
5, 2003—life forever changed. He died two months to the date of
his high school graduation. He loved life. He did not want to die.
He had many beautiful plans. He just wanted to stop the pain. He
did not choose to die as so many say it was their choice. Kani's
death was a complete shock. We never went through attempts or anything
like that, just grade challenges and irritability, sleeping alot
(I know now he was in probably clinical depression). How does one
know these things if you have no experience going through this with
mental health issues? My Mission is to support suicide prevention
programs in Hawaii. The Memory Tree of Lights is an annual event
that I would be heartfelt to be invovled with. Thank you for what
you are doing!
